The atmosphere and sound, I will give you. But the new version was so enthralling, and with Wilson finally back on top of his game (or, at least, probably more on top than he was when he was actually recording the original version) and with the benefit of hindsight to tell him which parts worked and which didn't and the technology finally able to back his ideas up, I just can't see how this would actually be better than anything other than an artifact, or a relic. Still, I am interested, don;t get me wrong. But, the version I would be returning to time and time again would be the one released a few years ago while this one would just sit on my shelf like a souvenir. I have various boots of Smile which I have listened to once only - the one released a few years ago I listen to about once a month or so. I would treat this the same as the bootlegs. Once and done.

Yeah, if money was the motivation then they've missed the boat there given
he state of the music business. Also it should have come out before Brian's
ersion, it's impact has been lessened.
Having said that, even with the Brian/Wondermints version, it is well worth
earing these original recordings. They have an atmosphere and sound that,
or all that they tried to copy the arrangements, simply isn't there in the
ew version. I can't believe that most Beach Boys fans aren't excited about
inally having this stuff properly released.

What I don't understand about this whole thing is who do they think is left
that's is going to buy it? I mean, other than the diehards, most fans (me
included) were more than satisfied with the version released a few years
ago, which was excellent. I can't imagine these tapes would top it, even
with a good remastering. I hope they aren't expecting any real sales
numbers.

I'm sure money had nothing to do with it. :)
