I posed this on FB this morning and got only one comment, a little
surprising considering most on there are music fans.
The "golden ear" was certainly influential. Of course, there's the
great story of Nesmith nearly punching him out-"that could have been
your face!" while trying to battle him for artistic control of their
work. And that Sugar Sugar, rejected by them, became a hit for Donnie's
next venture, the Archies, because cartoons "don't fight back".
I was ok with the Doobies being on, what's that about? On the other
hand, Helen Reddy over, say, the Raspberries would be a drag.
RIP

who could forget his wooden deilvery on his "Rock Concert" tv show?
How he'd mention all the managers and booking agents and producers when
he'd intro acts?
Not to mention the Monkees and the Archies of course....
those of us of a certain age remember the wasteland that TV music was
in the 1970's.....you'd stay up late just to see who was on Rock
Concert and Midnight Special, only to be disappointed that it was the
Doobie Brothers again or Helen Reddy or Jeff Altman....
nontheless, he was indeed an impressario...
