Anna, Bill and any others that may care...

In a word(s)...pretty awesome.

Let me say that I've been listening to the new Posies album a lot lately. I liked it quite a bit initially, but the more I listen the more I love it. Certainly live, all the new tracks completely hold their own with their older stuff.

I made it to Milwaukee in time to see Jon & Ken play an acoustic in-store before their show. With about 50 people in attendance, they decided to play unmiked and unamped. Beautiful. Here's what they played:

So Caroline
Glitter Prize
Licenses to Hide
Plastic Paperbacks
Golden Blunders
My Big Mouth
I May Hate You Sometimes
Beautiful One

Honestly, had I driven back to Chicago after the instore it would have been worth the trip. Every nailed everything and Beautiful One was just that. So after having them sign my new vinyl and poster, I made it to the venue just as Aquaduct started. I've got a few of their albums and like them well enough. I didn't know they were a 3 piece, but sounded much bigger than that. They played for about 30 minutes, were good and worth catching.

Next up were The Posies. If you've seen them before, you know what to expect. Tons of energy, jumping, and spit. The new stuff sounded fantastic (nice background vocals as well from their bassist Matt Harris). Set list was:

Plastic Paperbacks
Flavor of the Month
Please Return It
Sad to Be Aware
Licenses to Hide
So Caroline
Solar Sister
Glitter Prize
Enewetak (they absolutely nailed the Beach Boys-like coda)
Throwaway
She's Coming Down Again (probably my favorite song on the new album)
Definite Door
Dream All Day (encore)

Total playing time was a bit over an hour.

After a short break, Jon and Ken returned to the stage with Brendan and Brendan's drummer (who was very good). If Ken was playing bass, Jon played guitar. Most it was mostly Brendan on guitar, Jon on bass and Ken on keyboards. I've seen Brendan before and Jon and Ken definitely brought more of an edge to the songs (this is a very good thing). Obviously their background vocals and harmonies were brilliant.

Songs were:
A Whole Lot Better
Folk Singer
Crosseyed
Good to Me
Garbage day
Life in the D
Goingnowhere
Metalie
Feel Like Taking You Home
Me Just Purely
Cold Hands Warm Heart
Poised and Ready
Never Tell
What I'm Looking For
All to Love
Spit It out
Sitting Pretty
Tiny Spark
September Gurls
total time was about 75 minutes
Only song I wish he played was I'm Blessed

OK, I have one minor quibble with the show. During Brendan's set- between Ken on the keyboards for most of the set, both Ken and Jon still learning the songs (this was the first night of the tour) and Brendan being Brendan, there wasn't nearly as much energy on stage as The Posies' set. Apart from Brendan's Raconteurs association, I'm not sure why he was the closing band. Had he been in the middle and The Posies closing, it would have made for a much stronger set. That all being said, I would have a hard time thinking any fan of either band would be disappointed. I'd catch them again in Chicago tonight had I not have had something already going on. Which speaking of, I'm late for...

If you're going- have fun!
Chris
