He would probably say that his faith was always a part of his music, but he never wanted to be pigeonholed as a Christian artist. He originally recorded Too Cool to Be Christian in the early 80s, though Romeo Unchained was his first "official" Christian recording and pitched equally to secular and CCM stations.

Boy, I still remember the feeling I had the first time I heard H-A-T-R-E-D; love that song, but can never re-experience the jaw-dropping surprise of thinking I was listening to a Jackson Browne weepie. :-) (BTW, he loves LATE FOR THE SKY. :-))

Tonio K's a Christian Music guy now? Is that relatively new? I
certainly don't associate Christianity with my favorite Tonio K song
from back in the day ("H-A-T-R-E-D" from LIFE IN THE FOODCHAIN) which
included these lyrics:

yes i wish i was as mellow as for instance jackson browne
but "fountain of sorrow" my ass motherfucker
i hope you wind up in the ground

Still brings a smile to my face after all these years, and I say that
as someone who considers LATE FOR THE SKY one of the best albums ever
of that genre and period.
