Sondre Lerche played at NY's City Winery on Tuesday March 23rd. This was a terrific show. I found myself crying during the song he first sang Saturday at what became the SXSW tribute to Alex Chilton; "The Ballad of El Goodo." It is such a beautifully positive song with the now more achingly poignant line, "Years ago my heart was set to live/And I've been trying hard/Against strong odds/It gets so hard in time to hold on . . ." Sondre is a great singer and songwriter. His artistic sensibility helped make this a very special moment for me. My only quibble is that he described it as a mini-masterpiece. No mini to me! He also covered The Who's "I'm A Boy" with Tommy-like guitar accents. This was pure power pop! His own songs are brilliant and his guitar playing can be very exciting. I kept hearing sonic allusions to Jimi Hendrix in his angrier songs.
