Homewood -

You're exactly right. And falling with the bean counters who gave us Creed
are a ton of hard-working music lovers struggling to make a mark for art in
an industry that doesn't care. Not to mention a whole mess of decent and/or
brilliant musicians who thought they'd gotten "lucky" when they signed with
a major.

My hope for the fall of the empire is that those deserving artists who've
truly struck a chord with their audiences, with or without major label
support, will be able to sustain and grow their careers upon the head start
they've been given. We've seen this already. It can happen.

It's funny - my band was approached this winter by some con artist from LA
after we were included in Music Connection's "Hot 100 Unsigned Artists" - he
was trying to rope us into his elaborate and transparent "awards" show. I
wound up in an argument with him because he didn't even bother getting our
name right before spamming us, and he quickly flew into cursing at me like a
sailor and insulting my family, all the while claiming he was going to
nominate me "songwriter of the year" (based on a song we released in 2007).
Then he went into some twisted logic about how I was screwed anyway because
"the majors are all falling, and what are you going to do then? So sad..."

So, I calmly explained to him how the fall of the major labels will be the
best thing to happen to real music in decades, in great and pretty much
irrefutable detail. He didn't write back after that.

"Big Al" or something. He's one of the rats that will almost surely drown,
clinging to the sinking ship. Good Riddance.
