And not quite so loosely related, I should mention my recent Ray Davies
experience. Hardcore fans of his probably already know about his CD
released late last year, "The Kinks Choral Collection," which was a
reinterpretation of 15 of Ray's songs ranging from "You Really Got Me"
and "All Day and All of the Night" to more recent solo work like
"Working Man's Cafe." He's toured in the UK over the past year or so
with the London choir from the recording and had a great time doing it.
Back in early November, when he was here for the Rock and Roll Hall of
Fame gig, he did a mini US tour, a few dates in SF and LA and a few in
and around NYC, and for select dates, brought local choirs on stage to
perform a full set covering all the material from the album. Well, I
was in the NYC choir, which was also featured with Ray on David
Letterman on 11/18 (found here:
http://theaudioperv.com/2009/11/19/ray-davies-you-really-got-me-letterman-1118/;
various low-rez videos from our Town Hall performances can be found on
YouTube too).

Not all the songs are necessarily taken to greater heights with the
choral treatment, but some of them absolutely took on new life
(Victoria, Waterloo Sunset, Celluloid Heroes, a *killer* suite from
Village Green Preservation Society) and it was inCREDible to actually be
on stage with the man himself. He's still got a great voice, great
presence, and still has songwriting chops to die for.

For a brief, shining moment, it was so cool to be a rock star.
