Hi all,
Been quite awhile since I've posted here, but just wanted to alert folks in the DC/VA/MD area about this show!
The Neighbors (first time since '89!)
IOTA Club & Cafe
2832 Wilson Blvd
Arlington, VA 22201
(703) 522-8340
The Neighbors, a powerhouse power-pop band from the late 80's, were a fixture on the Washington/Baltimore music scene, playing their own Beatles/Rockpile-influenced originals at popular hangouts like dc space, the (original) 9:30 Club and the Bayou. Opening for such acts as Roy Orbison, NRBQ, Marshall Crenshaw and the dBs., they also split bills with like-minded local bands (e.g., B-Time, Hyaa!, The Wolves, Velvet Monkeys, Young Caucasians and the like). The Neighbors released two indie-label LPs (yes, vinyl albums), one of which was selected by the Washington City Paper as the best local record of the year. They had many fans with an appreciation for great hooks, tight harmonies, and a kick-ass attitude with the irreverent stage presence of a band that didnt take itself too seriously. By 1989, disparate interests intervened and The Neighbors decided to call it quits.
Guitarist John Moremen headed out to San Francisco where hes continued to play guitar and drums with bands like the Orange Peels, The Paul & John (with Paul Myers), MX-80, Roy Loney (Flamin' Groovies) and Half Japanese, while recording solo albums with collaborators such as Scott McCaughey (Minus 5) and D.J. Bonebrake (X). Guitarist Peter Gilstrap turned journalist and has spent the last 20 years in Phoenix, AZ and Los Angeles, CA writing for publications including the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, LA Weekly and Variety. Gilstrap also co-wrote and co-directed a web-animation-turned-feature-film called "Lil Pimp" (2005). The rhythm section of Scott McKnight (bass) and Steve Woehrle (drums) remained in the DC area and have continued to play, separately and together, in such bands as Last Train Home, Kevin Johnson and the Linemen, The Neighbors and (currently) Jelly Roll Mortals.
