It seems I'm always too busy discovering mid-late 60's/early 70's gems unheard by the general public to notice new stuff. Faves of this type I've found this year:

Humble Pie - Thunderbox - 1974 - The pie minus Frampton. This just rocks my freakin' world! The guitar solo's aren't anything to write home about, but Steve Marriot's voice IS.
After the discovery of 'Thunderbox' I went through their back catalogue and discovered that I LOVE their first 2 albums, as well. Frampton is all over those records and they're filled with beautiful guitar and vocal work. Totally different than what I'd fallen for in the first place, but wow...great records.

Daughters of Albion - s/t - produced by Leon Russell in 1968: outstanding boy/girl/folk/rock/pop with great vocal arrangements a la the Mamas and the Papas/Spanky and Our Gang, but more soulful and Beatley.

Asylum Choir - Look Inside The Asylum Choir - 1968 - Fantastically Beatlesque album from Leon Russell and Marc Benno. Outstanding. I've yet to hear Asylum Choir II.

Gracious! - This Is Gracious! and s/t- 1970-'71 - Mellotron, Good guitar and vox, both albums have some gems but the latter is the better of the two.

The Blackwood Apology - House of Leather - 1969 Psychedelic/folk rock supreme. Great album to chill to.

Al Stewart - Love Chronicles - 1969/Orange - 1972 - 2 Terrific albums with some fantastic songs and, as always, Stewarts' warm and wonderful voice makes every song very personal

But since you asked...
Best pop album of 2009:
The Duckworth-Lewis Method
...by a long shot!!!!
