Robert,
This info is from pretty deep inside EMI/Apple. As for that mix of I Am the
Walrus check out the stereo version on the Anthology DVD. It's true stereo
at the end. I made my own version editing in the end of the Anthology
version with my own needledrop of the beginning from my German Hor Zu lp of
Magical Mystery Tour. It works very well.
True stereo remixes of the first two albums are problematic since they were
recorded to twin track BTR tape machines with the music on one one track
(recorded live) and the vocals on the on the other track. When they did
overdubs they just bounced to another twin track machine with pretty much
the same stereo placement. There is new technology that is somewhat able ot
isolate individual elements from a mono mix and place it in a stereo
spectrum. This was used on the Beatles Rock Band game. The software is still
in it's infancy and getting better exponentially quickly but hi-fi is still
a little bit away. It will happen though. I've heard some very cool beta
versions of 50's rockabilly tunes with pianos and other instruments panned
in the stereo mix. I'd buy the software myself but it's currently $1500. My
guess is that within a year or two the software will be better, cheaper and
more hi fi.
