Dave Edmunds and Nick Lowe, separately and collectively (as Rockpile).
During my musical Wonder Years, they were busy putting out albums that
taught me about rock and roll's past and present, served up with a
healthy dose of wickedly sly humor. I'll hold Edmunds' "Get It",
"Tracks on Wax 4" and "Repeat When Necessary" up against any other
contemporary artist's string of three consecutive albums. Lowe's "Jesus
of Cool" (dubbed "Pure Pop for Now People" so as not to offend delicate
Yankee sensibilities) and "Labour of Lust" were equally brilliant.
Strangely, I found "Seconds of Pleasure," the long-awaited LP released
under the Rockpile moniker, to be a major letdown--crushed by the weight
of my expectations. Perhaps Dave and Nick felt likewise--the band's
demise followed soon thereafter.
