Not to jump on the R.E.M. bandwagon (pun intended), but it would be them for me in my formative years.

I was in college in 1983 when I was first heard them via the incredible "Murmur" and was immediately hooked.  The jangly chords, the interesting rhythms, the muddy vocals.  I had not really heard anything quite like them.  They also caused me to investigate bands that had passed me by before - most notably The Velvet Underground and The Byrds.

Once I started working for the school radio station, a whole new musical world opened up for me - the college rock/CMJ bands.

R.E.M. were the kings of that hill and I looked forward to every new album release.  I liken that to how it must have been for a first-generation Beatles fan looking forward to their new albums.  I'm not comparing them as bands, just in the enthusiasm I felt for their records.

I saw many R.E.M. shows back then and they were as exciting as their records.  And I still love those records.

Sadly, I started losing interest in them with their latter Warner Brothers albums that just seemed lifeless and boring (to me).

However, I am very happy that I enjoyed their latest album so much.  "Accelerate" was a lot of fun.

R.E.M. Was mine as well. In high school in the late 70's south I was into the Allman'a' Skynard etc. Then I moved to ATL and heard Chronic Town. As far as I know I was the first in ATL to buy Murmer. They opened my ears to the amazing sounds in the music scene in ATL and Athens. Still listen to the old REM albums today.

OK...the iPod was on shuffle mode while I was preparing dinner and it happened to be kicking out a lot of early to mid period R.E.M.  As I listened, I began to think that more than any other band, these guys really seemed to be the soundtrack to my coming of age, both on a musical and personal level.  I realized that so many memorable and fun moments occurred while R.E.M. were blasting away in the background.  Maybe it was the two glasses of wine I had ingested, but I suddenly realized that R.E.M were my Beatles, in that they seemed to encapsulate both everything I was experiencing at that time and everything I aspired to be.

If there is another younger band or artist that had a major impact on your life in a way that the Beatles impacted an earlier generation, what is it?
