If it can be avoided in any way, I am not buying via download: I even
gave up my eMusic subscription when they announced that for the
privilege of being able to download Sony catalogue records I already
own, they were doubling my per-track price.
That said, I would say I'm buying about 2:1 CDs to LPs these days.
Anything where I think my enjoyment of the album would be greater on
vinyl and the price is not ridiculously marked up, that's what I get.
(At Newbury Comics, which has put large vinyl sections back into most
of their stores, some new vinyl LPs are selling for well over $20 when
the CD is $9.99 or less!) I'm not a vinyl purist in that I don't buy
that vinyl intrinsically *sounds* better than CD, but I would argue
that vinyl is a different and more meditative listening experience.
CDs I can listen to while I'm doing other things, but LPs I tend to
sit and listen to, often with a cat on my lap and a lovely beverage
nearby.
Both CDs and LPs get downloaded into iTunes immediately, for on the go
listening, especially now that all the Zipcars in Boston have been
outfitted with iPod jacks.
FYI, I preordered the upcoming Orange Peels album on vinyl: if they
get enough orders to afford it, they'll do a vinyl run.
