I actually find the lyrics more amusing than cringeworthy.  It seems to me that it's an attempt to achieve a Lennon creation like "I Am The Walrus", who in turn (if memory serves) was trying to tap into the spirit of Lewis Carroll.

So, although a great example, probably more "abstract expressionism" than a serious attempt at lyric writing.
