Ah, ELP, that brings back the memories!  I don't know that there ever  was 
a band that affected me the way I hear the Beatles affected people in the  
60's, but after I got over my Paul McCartney & Wings / Elton John phase when  
I was a young, the band that really hit me was Yes.  Very strange when I  
first heard them, with the long songs and all the instrumental fury, but they 
 still had enough melody to be accessible. And they led me to realize that 
bands  existed that weren't just writing catchy pop songs. Like ELP, or Can. 
And now I  have more Amon Duul II and Magma records than anyone really 
needs. 
 
And although I believe I already had a guitar when I first heard Yes, they  
did result in my eventually buying a synthesizer. Curse you Rick Wakeman!
