Matt Hurwitz was one of a group of journalists invited to Capitol Records in Los Angeles to hear the Beatles remastered CDs in a special preview a few weeks ago. Here are his comments on what he heard:
Hey, Steve--
I wanted to let you know I was fortunate to be invited to Capitol Studios in Hollywood several weeks back to have a little preview of the newly remastered Beatles albums. Abbey Road engineers Allan Rouse and Guy Massey (both of whom I've interviewed previously for Mix Magazine, where I regularly write about recording and mastering) played a few journalists samples of tracks from each album, both old and new (and in mono and in stereo, where applicable), "A-B"-ing them for us, though the comparison was hardly necessary.
The new masters are packed with such power and detail, particularly obvious when compared to the original CDs, that it was, for me at least, reminiscent of the time I first heard a Beatles CD back in 1987, and how surprised I was at how much more Beatles I was able to hear in songs I'd always heard on vinyl - it's about the same level of jump from the old CDs to the new.
There were several occasions that the other journalist in the room and I both gave an audible "Whew!" after hearing some of the tracks! Anyone questioning "Should I buy these?" should have no worries.
