Tough challenge. I don't think that The Flaming Lips fit my definition
of power pop, but both The Soft Bulletin & Yoshimi are in my short list
of favorite albums from the past decade. Spilt Milk is a classic, but I
think the songwriting on Bellybutton is stronger while Spilt Milk relies
more on it's production. What Michael wrote about the Lips' Bulletin is
true for me with FoW. I loved their first album so much that everything
after it paled in comparison. I'm inclined to choose YHF by Wilco
because it's such a great album and a stretch for them from a production
standpoint (incidentally inspired by the Lips), but...

Put me down for Weezer's Green Album. It's their most consistent album,
it's defines my idea of power pop more than anything mentioned above
besides FoW and it's one of the few albums I listened to for the first
time then immediately gave it another spin. It also was successful on
the radio per Mike's challenge part deux.

As for whether our style of music is in vogue or not, I don't really
listen to music on the radio anymore but I heard an All American Rejects
song recently that I considered straightforward - and likeable - power
pop. According to Billboard it charted top ten. My guess is that the
music of the Jonas Bros and most of the Disney ilk fall into the more
saccharine realm of power pop. And, as Dr. Smith would most likely
agree, Green Day is a power pop band that sold 14 million copies of
American Idiot. Not bad.

Thanks,
Matt
