just as a thought to build on what you said... yes, the late 60's/early 70's were a golden age for me on radio because you COULD (and did every hour) hear a succession of songs such as you mentioned... but today I don't know where to kind that except on my all-time favorite radio station, the one that plays EVERY song I like... my iPod   :)

that's why I raised the question of fractionalization... I feel that golden age is gone

OK, I'll take a whack at this.

> - is it that radio has marginalized this music?

I think the music business is interested in controlling talent now more than ever. You control it by making sure
the talent you start out with has only a certain level of musical skill. Competent, but not along the lines of a
mega-musical force. They are not interested in that.

The "talent" has the look, style and attitude to be propped up by the industry. This appeals
to younger people who don't know any better. More on this later. The industry supplies the songs
and the talent shakes their ass to the grove. Let the adulation begin.

> - is it that music styles have fractionalized to the point where our tiny subdivision has gotten lost?

I don't see fractionalization a problem. Think back to the golden era of AM radio... you'd have a song by Sly & The Family Stone, followed by one from The Beatles followed by Joe South followed by The 1910 Fruit Gum Company. Nothing got lost because maybe people were more open to different styles. Radio wasn't afraid they'd lose listeners by offering diverse content.

> - has the average music lover lost appreciation for melody/harmony such as found in our favorite songs?

Among many in the 30 and under crowd, yes, yes, yes. Many older music fans who are passionate about melody/harmony have gravitated towards country music. There is an entire generation who has been sold the idea that it's just beat, some dude or dudette yammering on like an auctioneer and some meandering on the guitar that constitutes a song. The craft of song writing the way people on this list know it is dead in mainstream pop music.

> - is it something personal for us, that we seek out the obscure lost nuggets?

I think we as music lovers of a certain style of song writing with melody/harmony will search out what we are passionate about because it sure isn't being presented to us in popular media. Luckily audities and other web sites/online retailers make this search a little easier.
