OK, I'll take a whack at this.

I think the music business is interested in controlling talent now  
more than ever. You control it by making sure
the talent you start out with has only a certain level of musical  
skill. Competent, but not along the lines of a
mega-musical force. They are not interested in that.

The "talent" has the look, style and attitude to be propped up by the  
industry. This appeals
to younger people who don't know any better. More on this later. The  
industry supplies the songs
and the talent shakes their ass to the grove. Let the adulation begin.

I don't see fractionalization a problem. Think back to the golden era  
of AM radio... you'd have a song by Sly & The Family Stone, followed  
by one from The Beatles followed by Joe South followed by The 1910  
Fruit Gum Company. Nothing got lost because maybe people were more  
open to different styles. Radio wasn't afraid they'd lose listeners  
by offering diverse content.

Among many in the 30 and under crowd, yes, yes, yes. Many older music  
fans who are passionate about melody/harmony have gravitated towards  
country music. There is an entire generation who has been sold the  
idea that it's just beat, some dude or dudette yammering on like an  
auctioneer and some meandering on the guitar that constitutes a song.  
The craft of song writing the way people on this list know it is dead  
in mainstream pop music.

I think we as music lovers of a certain style of song writing with  
melody/harmony will search out what we are passionate about because  
it sure isn't being presented to us in popular media. Luckily  
audities and other web sites/online retailers make this search a  
little easier.
