I feel the need to take advantage of this thread to mention a record I've been revisiting lately that, while not my favorite power pop record of the past several decades, is really, really good, and that's 'Yours, Mine, & Ours' by the Pernice Brothers.
I just saw "Weakest Shade of Blue" used in a movie trailer (which film? I don't even remember), and it prompted me to go back to the album. Man is it gorgeous. Catchy songs, smart lyrics, Joe Pernice's lovely voice -- if you haven't heard it, you should.
Elsewhere, I've thrown a lot of support over the years to the Loud Family's 'Plants & Birds & Rocks & Things,' which was my first Scott Miller experience, and still my favorite, but I'd also agree with the poster who took issue with the idea that that album could've been commercially successful. It was pretty weird, even as "alternative" began its ascent, with really short songs, oddball lyrics, the transitional elements between songs, and the aforementioned "challenge" of Scott's voice. Those factors were all things that drew me to 'P&B&R&T,' but that I think made it pretty non-commercial, despite the catchiness of many of the songs ("Last Honest Face" is probably my favorite, although it's tough to choose).
As for Roxette, I was able to come up with seven of nine hits, had to check for the other two -- but I must admit that I've been a sucker for their singles since "The Look" was a huge hit my senior year of high school.
