I may have overbilled this. It was simply a chance meeting in the late '90s,
when I was working part time at Meltdown Comics on Sunset Boulevard.
One afternoon, I ran into David Bash checking the racks at a used CD place
(of course) on the same block, and, on a whim, brought him to our store to
meet the owner and maybe discuss cross-promotion ideas between Meltdown
and IPO LA, which was just getting established at the time.
When we arrived, I spotted Grant there, chatting with owners Gaston and Leia
and signing some of his books we had stock. (For you non-comic-geeks, Grant
Morrison was, and is, a big-deal writer in the field. At the time, he was
still living in the UK and just visiting LA. I had met him on one of his
previous visits to the store.)
As I introduced David to the owners, Morrison overheard the phrase
"International Pop Overthrow" and was immediately intrigued. (This reaction
would not surprise Grant's fans, particularly readers of his INVISIBLES
series.) So I introduced Bash and Morrison to each other and continued to
talk to the owners.
I wasn't privy to the bulk of their brief conversation, although I remember
Grant mentioning one of his obscure old bands, the Fauves (
http://tiny.cc/gigsu) at which point Pop Encyclopedia Dave brought up the
other obscure (in the USA) Fauves (http://www.thefauves.com/)
And that's pretty much where my memory of the incident ends. For me,
it was nice "worlds colliding" moment, having prominent members of my two
fave hobbies cross paths like that.
