So I'm almost done with obsessing over the Neil Young Archives box,
which I've been returning to over and over again for the last several
weeks. But one last nagging thought keeps coming to mind as I'm
listening to the 16-minute "Cowgirl in the Sand" from the Fillmore
East concert: the knock on Crazy Horse at the time was that they were
an incredibly sloppy, amateurish band. Is it three-plus decades'
worth of exposure to punk, lo-fi and twee-pop bands that makes this
not sound particularly undisciplined to me? And more to the point, in
what way would this be genuinely improved if the musicianship was
tighter?
