Though I rarely post, I thought I might comment on these somewhat recent shows I caught in NYC.

Peter Holsapple and Chis Stamey played a place called City Winery in support of their new album "Here and Now." I was impressed by the spaciousness and civility of the venue: new, clean, upscale, comfortable, with a giant wine list and an appealing menu. All in all, a good show. The playing was a little shaky; I guess it was early in the tour. But the new material is solid, very much recalling the sound/feel of their earlier record, "Mavericks," and of course The dB's. I'd say it's the best from either of them in a long while. They closed with a somewhat shambling cover of Chris Bell's "I Am The Cosmos." Didn't do it justice. I bought their cd at the show and - but for a few clunkers - am not disappointed.

And I caught Tinted Windows at the Highline Ballroom. I was taken aback by the number of young women at the show (courtesy of Taylor, of course). I'm more accustomed to seeing a bunch of old guys like myself at power pop shows. Not suprisingly, they played most of the Tinted Windows album, with one Cheap Trick and one Buzzcocks cover. Bun E. was tight, and kicked ass. Haven't seen him play in decades. He's a machine. Otherwise, they were borderline sloppy. But live, the songs come across better/catchier than they do on the album. A solid set.
