I have an unfair advantage and have heard this in progress since the
beginning of last year, and completed in September. Jason came up to my
radio show and debut it when he came back from mixing it in Calif.
Must admit to being a late comer to Grandaddy, and only a casual fan. I
quite like this one. It's a bit more compact, and maybe even more
personal. It's just a delight, and reveals itself well over time.
The other day I pulled out Software Slump to see how it sounded compared
to Commuter. I much prefer the new one. A lot more organic. Some fans
have complained it's "too simple". and doesn't offer up enough of the
dense GD sound. The same sense of melody is there, but don't expect 7
minute long songs... which I think mostly filled the space with long repeats
If you were a fan of Jason's I'd think you'd see the progression.
I didn't know anything about Jason until I met him, when he moved up
here. What I know is from recording with him, skiing, hanging out, etc.
the new record reflects the guy know very well. Our backgrounds are
similar, but separated by 17 years. I have to think his music has
influenced what I have been working on a little. He's listened to our
new stuff, made some suggestions, and played on a tune or two. He's in
Europe right now, and will do some West Coast gigs coming up in a week
or two. After that, I think it's just random stuff, mostly solo/one man
band. If you go over to JasonLytle.com, there is a bit of vid I took
when he played the record store day gig here. very funny. A guy who can
think of this sort of presentation is ok by me.
