I was in New Orleans last week for Jazzfest and also went to the 2-day Ponderosa Stomp, held at the House of Blues on Decatur. The people who run it reach out to obscure rockers and R&B artists, some of whom had not even been in the music industry for 30-40 years. They also have a good track record of convincing artists who had not played together in a long time to reunite.
And so... somehow they convinced the 2 prime movers of the original Flamin' Groovies, Cyril Jordan and Roy Loney, to reunite. NYC's A-Bones backed them. It was quite a show and transcended my expectations. They were loud and fast and played most of the stuff you'd expect as if this was a show from 1971, which, by the way, was the last time these 2 guys played a set together. Roy was a madman but his vocals were incredibly rich and full of energy... funny watching a portly, 60-something man dressed in a sport coat that must have cost all of $6 from a sale rack at the thrift store wander on-stage and own the crowd 2 minutes later. At one point, Cyril said, "Roy, we've got to do this again!" and Roy smiled back in affirmation. I so hope that comes true.
They left the stage, and ? and the Mysterians played one of the hottest 2-hr sets I've seen in years (don't laugh, their original guitarist and drummer from 1962!!! are amazing musicians and ? is a wildman), and I dragged myself back to my hotel at 4:15, not believing half of what I had seen that night.
