Maybe Len can get the Cubs a new song to play after they win. Steve Goodman was a fine songwriter, but that "Go Cubs Go" song is so cloying -- not one of his better moments. (NOTE: This isn't sniping because I'm a White Sox fan - Wrigley has some great traditions, such as fans in the bleachers throwing back opposition home run balls, which no other fans should imitate, because it's original to Wrigley. But the "Go Cubs Go" song is so lame, and I'm glad it's not "Go Sox Go".)

> For several years now David Bash and I have been hoping to see Len Kasper show up at a Chicago IPO gig. It hasn't happened yet, but we still keep hoping. Perhaps this weekend? After all, the Cubs are on an extended homestand, and since Kasper has name-dropped Material Issue several times on the air as being one of his all-time favorite bands, I've gotta think that he'd be really excited to see the Ted Ansani Project headlining tomorrow night's IPO show at the Red Line Tap.
>
> Kasper slips in musical references fairly often on Cubs telecasts. He has some input into what gets played during the "Fan-Cam" segment of crowd shots in the sixth inning of Cubs telecasts. And his excitement when they had the Redwalls in the broadcast booth at Wrigley Field after they'd sung "Take Me Out To the Ballgame" during the seventh-inning stretch of a game three years ago was palpable.
>
> Every winter Kasper and color commentator Bob Brenly host a concert to raise money for the Cubs Care charity, and they do a couple of numbers themselves (Kasper singing and Brenly hammering out power chords on his Les Paul). In fact, the current WGN Cubs promo is the two of them performing "Take Me Out To the Ballgame" with their backing band. The backing band that they've used at their Cubs Care gigs is a dyed-in-the-wood power pop band, Milwaukee-based IPO veterans Stall.
>
> As a Cubs fan and a power pop fan, I think it's cool that the team's television play-by-play guy and I are so simpatico in our musical tastes that his ultimate triple bill (the Plimsouls and Dom Mariani opening up for a Replacements reunion show) is amazingly close to mine.
