My guess is that it's probably the overall consensus' way of preparing the Beatles' catalog for a new and future audience in the 21st Century.
I'd further suggest that if Sir George had his way, stereo versions of the earlier albums wouldn't be made available, and probably another reason why the mono and stereo versions are going to be available separately. Undoubtedly, somebody related to the whole mess will talk about it one of these days to set the record straight.
Am I happy about the double-dipping? Oh, no. Will I pick both sets up? Probably.
My pal (and true Beatle fan) Kerry got a rare opportunity to hear Geoff Emerick speak at a midwestern university a few months back, and heard some of what must now be the new mixes in the presentation. His comment? "Incredible!"

What annoys me more than anything about this is the promotional
corporate crap spouted. When the CDs came out years ago, I remember the
first few were in mono because "that's how they were intended to be"
according to EMI, Apple, George Martin et al. Now we have the chance to
hear them again "for the first time on CD in stereo" - presumably how
they were never intended to be heard?
