On the last track on last year's "Blame It On Gravity" from the Old 97s,
"The One," Rhett Miller name-checks each of the members in something
between a tall tale and a shaggy-dog story about the band. Great tune,
too.

Friday thread idea...

I had my IPOD in shuffle mode the other day when "I Hate Music" came on
by the Replacements. The song "quotes" band member Tommy's sometime
hating music ("I hate music, sometimes I don't. Tommy says so, Tommy says
so"). Another Mat's song "Tommy get's his tonsils out" is also about
Tommy (see title).

I'm sure most of you are familiar with these two songs and naturally that
is not why I brought them up. I was thinking it might be a fun thread to
come up with songs that one band member wrote and sings about a specific
member of the band. I'm not talking the more typical musical shout outs
such as "play it Jimmy" kind of line but rather the song's content is
directly about or quotes one of their own band members. In fact, I
wouldn't be surprised if I'm forgetting another song or two by the
Replacements.

I just thought of another: "Venus" by Television. About Richard Lloyd
Verlaine sings "Richie said, hey man let's dress up like cops, think of
what we could do".

I guess I'm less curious about songs such as "American Band" per they are
singing about the group as a whole rather then the individual within. I'm
also less interested in songs in which the lead is singing about
themselves. There is something more interesting and in some ways charming
(to me anyway) about a band singing about another band member in the
scope of the song. Again, these are my thoughts of what interests me in
terms of this topic but if you are game and need to stretch my "rules"
add what you will…

Any you can think of?

Steve D.
