The band was diverted through Toronto by two very hip promoters who figured they'd catch the band on the way to the US for their first ever tour in support of "Roxanne" breaking stateside. Problem was, there was already a local Toronto band called The Police doing a residency at another popular club. Sting and crew were greeted to a rousing audience of 6 people.
However, on the return trip at the end of the US tour, they cycled back through Canada where "Roxanne" had finally made them household names, where they sold out another Toronto club with ease.
To this day 15,000 people claim they were at the first show....when, in fact, everyone saw the SECOND show on the return trip.
Sting makes light of this fact everytime he's in town (including the two previous Police reunion pass throughs): "How many of you saw us at The Edge in '79?"....nearly everyone puts up their hands....."Liars!"
