In the old days, opening bands might play 20 mins and 30 mins. Headliner
another 45 or 50, then they'd do it again. I'm speaking of the Fillmore.
When I saw Hendrix, there were three opening bands: John Mayall, Albert
King, and The Soft Machine (who only played one set) We got out at like
2.30! Best $3.50 ever spent. I agree. Local gigs are so lame now. I went
out to see only two shows last year. At one, the first band was setting
up at 10.30 and trying to do a sound check. Why? Then they played far
too long. This was on a Monday night. Our pal Herman Jolly and his band
Little Pieces couldn't understand why there wasn't a big crowd... Bands
never start before 10.30 here, but then, no one will show up before
then... I just don't go see the local bar gigs, and sadly, there are
never even bands I want to see anymore come through.
