Jaimie,
You need to calm down ;)

I initated this discussion and I can assure that I have not "lost" any of
the original sources for my digital music files. I still have all of the
original CDs and vinyl from my own collection which made up the bulk of my
digital library. I can easily re-download my digital purchases from eMusic.
iTunes is another story. But I did rip backup CD-Rs of most of my iTunes
downloads. For me anyway, the main issue is that I have to "rebuild" my
entire digital library, which I will concede is quite annoying and time
consuming. Now if I had actually lost all of the original sources in a fire
or earthquake, many of which cannot be easily replaced, then I would be
freaking out! I actually look at the digital files as a safeguard against
that type of catastrophe. I just have to be more diligent and create
backups so I don't have to do this again.

IMHO, digital files and storage are in their infancy. Storage devices are
only going to become bigger in capacity, smaller in size and cheaper in
price, so I think it is only going to become easier and more convienient to
store and backup a digital library.

Cheers,
Mark E.

The apocalypse is at hand, dear music lovers. Never thought I'd see the day
when THIS geek speak would be a necessity in relation to MUSIC. For the
better part of 50 years the ONLY conversation about storing one's music
collection dealt with how many shelves you needed (and where). In the last 5
years we not only concern ourselves with storing our music, but the fear of
LOSING it.

How many people do you know who've lost music collections in fires and
earthquakes? How many people do you know who've lost music collections on
hard drives?

I'll take my chances with the fires and earthquakes, thank you very much.
There's a greater chance I'll still have my music collection in 5 years if
they're NOT on hard drives.
