Among the stuff are two vinyl (?) records, both a bit smaller in
circumference than a standard 45 RPM single. They are from the early to
mid-'40s and feature messages my father recorded while he was in the service
and sent back home to his Ma in Kansas City MO. The problem is they were
recorded at, I would guess, 16RPM, since they were far too slow when I tried
to play them on my turntable at 331/3RPM.

Joe, I'd try to play them at 78rpm and here's why...  there used to be booths in stores that people could go in and record themselves for a small amount of money.  The booth would have a recording device that would generate a one-off disc for them to take away and these were typically 78RPM.  Perhaps the most famous use of this service was this guy in Memphis who sang and recorded a couple of songs and sent them into Sun records and the rest is history...

Some people also were lucky enough to afford a home version that would allow you to record things off the radio and on to a disk.  I bought some rare recordings of Frank Sinatra that were recorded in this manner on eBay and clearly the seller had no clue what they had.

Good luck!  I'm doing some genealogy work right now and it is amazing to sit back and think what my family was going through 75-150 years ago.

Mike
