I shelled out for Mozy online backup, which has served its purpose well.
Also I have a Windows Home Server with 1Tb in the house that I use to
back up everything locally. This is useful if the system itself is
unrecoverable; you can restore the entire system in question using a
bootable CD. And the backups run automatically and the Home Server
manages its own storage, so you can just keep adding disks and it gets
automatically added to the storage pool.

I don't have any options to offer on CD storage, but Anna's posting
got me to thinking about storage of digital files. I have been
storing my digital music files on an external hard drive, but I am
looking at rebuilding my entire digital library as my 500GB hard
drive fried (and I have been informed that the files cannot be
recovered.) And no, I did not have a backup. (Doh). For those
Audities members that have large digitial collections (300GB+), how
do you backup your files? Do you have another external hard drive
dedicated solely for backup? Should I consider another (third) hard
drive should the second backup drive fail? I've thought about online
storage, but after looking at the price, that doesn't appear to be a
financially feasible option.
I really don't want to have to go through this entire rebuilding
process again, so if anyone has any ideas, I would greately
appreciate it.

BTW, a few years back I dropped off a large amount of jewel cases
at my local library since I noticed that a lot of their CD and DVD
jewel cases were really battered up. They were very appreciative at
the time, so that may also be an option to consider.

Hi Peter
I posted a similar question about a year ago. The nicest
recommendation i received was for the following system:
http://www.mmdesign.com/
The sleeves are highest quality, but not cheap. Almost 50 cents
each! they hold the tray card and booklet very nicely, though.
I ended up "investing" in the whole system, including a custom
cabinet on wheels with locks on the drawers. They claim it will
hold about 1200 cds in their sleeves, I'm finding it's quite a
bit fewer. Also, DIGIPAKS! Oh my god, where do they go?Â
They fit in the drawers, but take up more space.
All added up, I've spent well over $1000 on this stuff and now
I'm halfway through and I still have a ton of cds and no place
else to put them! I bought some of the sleeves Ron mentioned
from Bags Unlimited, they also offer a size that will hold the
tray card. These are okay, but flimsy and no lint free fabric
to protect the cd. Cheap, though.
I am now in the process of sorting cds by a priority, with
"important" cds going in the cabinet, the rest going in Bags
Unlimited storage boxes.
In the end, I'm kicking myself. In a couple of years, I will
have adjusted completely to digital collecting and I will have
all these cds I haven't played in years. Two years ago, I never
thought I would say that, but now I really get it. Especially
since I have to move back in with my mother to help her with some
health issues. I'll be down to one room for my stuff. It's
going to be a nightmare!
Anyway, MM Design is the BEST, but most expensive. Bags
Unlimited is chintzy, but will do in a pinch if you don't care
about really protecting your cds.Â
Box Sets are the devil.
FINALLY, when getting rid of jewel cases, please PLEASE recycle
them. I actually send mine to a place on the East Coast, at my
own cost (media mail, not too pricey.)Â Many city recycling
centers won't process them, so be sure before you put them out.
