This is a weird list for me, because I think I put the Bon Iver record in my top ten last year, and I really love The Supreme Genius of King Khan and the Shrines, but that's a comp -- and I probably listened to those records more than any other this year. So here goes:
1. She & Him - Vol. I
you know the scoop on this one
2. James - Hey Ma
a really strong comeback album (and I'm always a skeptic) from my favorite live band of the early 90s
3. Cut Copy - In Ghost Colours
all around catchy, dance-y record, and even though I'm pretty tired of revisiting the eighties, these guys make it a lot of fun
4. Lucinda Williams - Little Honey
just Lucinda being herself, doing what she does best.
5. Magnetic Fields - Distortion
this one got dismissed by most, but I thought it was Stephen Merritt's strongest set of songs in awhile...and who doesn't like a big wall of fuzz?
6. David Byrne/Brian Eno â Everything That Happens Will Happen Today
smart and classy, just the record I'd figure these two would make at this point in their careers -- and a really strong set of lyrics from Byrne.
7. Little Joy - S/T
a sneaky, laid-back little record that I found myself going back to again and again, from Fab from the Strokes, and the singer of Los Hermanos. Who'd have guessed?
8. Little Jackie - The Stoop
I never listen to top 40 radio, but in my head, this is what I think it should sound like almost a decade into the 21st century (and yes, I know it doesn't really sound anything like this).
9. Vivian Girls - S/T
Good garage-y, girl-group-y fun.
10. High Places - S/T
gentle, breezy, a summer afternoon of a record
Disappointments: Jolie Holland (toning down the weird), TV on the Radio (just didn't hear the songs)
Happy New Year,
--Shawn
