Sadly, Peter, there isn't an idiot-proof way to do it, because Apple has
engineered iTunes and the iPod to prevent you from doing so; iTunes is the
onramp to your iPod but not vice versa.
That said, there are third party solutions that will let you do it. I have
been in a similar situation and used copypod, but it took a couple of tries
to figure out how to get it right. Once I did though it worked like a
charm.
