Every era has its pluses and minuses. But IMHO, 1964-1969 was a watershed era for rock music the likes of which we have not seen since. Listen to your favorite record from 1963 and then listen to your favorite from 1969. You won't find a bigger difference in any six year period, because the genre expanded and evolved at its most rapid pace in the late 60's, with the Beatles at the forefront, for a number of reasons. There were technical advancements (multitracking and effects), there were cultural factors (war, drugs, us vs. them (kids vs. parents), FM radio) that drove kids to rally around the music, elements from other genres were being applied to rock for the first time (jazz rhythms, Indian instrumentation, classical strings), etc. These factors coalesced to create rapid change in the rock genre.
The release of a new Beatles album was a transgenerational, transnational event -- not like this Guns 'n' Roses crap. The old guy working in the flower shop was humming Beatles songs all day. Can you imagine him whistling Nirvana? It just doesn't compare.
Just FYI, I was born in 1965, so I don't remember any of this happening. I guess "my" time should be the late 70's and the 80's. And there was great music then, to be sure. But as much as I love them, you won't catch me comparing Pink Floyd or R.E.M. to the Beatles, or even the Kinks. Well, maybe the Kinks. ;-)
