My main problem with Lefsetz is his math. How do 11 years equal one
decade?

It seems as if some people are bashing Lefsetz defending his era by
defending their own. But does the "best" era have to be the one where
you had your own musical comeuppance? My high school years were
1972-76. As I remember it, radio was at a low point as I never
developed a fondness for Led Zeppelin, the Doobie Brothers, Elton
John, and other artists being spoonfed to me and my classmates.

Personally, I'd choose the 15 years that mostly preceded my own birth
as the most creative in American music history. That would be the
post-World War II years of 1945-59 (I was born in '58). It was a prime
period for rock `n' roll, electric and acoustic blues, jazz, country,
bluegrass, western swing, gospel, R&B, vocal groups, etc. It was also
the absolute golden age of independent labels.

Think of some of the people who made their first, best, or
breakthrough recordings during those years: Hank Williams, Bill
Monroe, Bob Wills, Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Muddy Waters, Howlin'
Wolf, B.B. King, T-Bone Walker, Lightnin' Hopkins, Mahalia Jackson,
Sister Rosetta Tharpe, Big Joe Turner, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly,
Thelonious Monk, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, John
Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Ray Charles, James Brown, Herbie Nichols,
Nat King Cole, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Sam Cooke, the Orioles, the
Teenagers, the Coasters, the Louvin Brothers, and the list goes on.

I've lived through every era since and haven't experienced a stronger one.

Jim McGuinness
