I loved Go Insane so much when it came out. I'm on my third copy-- vinyl;
cd; and signed cd (bought it at the NYC Screws show.)
In one sense it sounds very much like the year it was recorded-- heavy use
of fairlight synths (which also cropped up on Tango in the Night.) I
usually say that as a criticism. But what I love about this record is that
it presents itself with a hard shell, an icy veneer-- at first listen is
appears cold and unemotional, once-removed from human emotion, very
synthetic. But with repeated listens, the raw passion and emotion in the
songs begins to seep through-- it always reminded me of that gum where after
you chew it a while, you get a squirt of flavor in your mouth (no wise
comments please...) Only by listening several times can you experience the
folding back of the veneer and become immersed in the raw passion beneath.
The process of this discovery made Go Insane one of the most rewarding
records I've ever experienced. I do think Out of the Cradle is "better,"
but I love this one more.
To be honest, my experience of discovery occurred with the vinyl; I cannot
be 100% sure the effect works with the CD.
