Not seeing a lot of love here for the new one from the Paul Collins Beat -
RIBBON OF GOLD is a lot more up-tempo than the last couple of offerings and
frontloaded with a few tracks that will appeal to fans originally swooned by
the first couple of albums. Granted we're 20+ years down the pike from that,
but "Hey DJ", "I Still Want You", "She Doesn't Want To Hang Around With You"
and "Big Pop Song" are cut from that same cloth. Solid album, only "Parlez
Vous Francais?" is a misstep (for me) and the slower tempo songs are still
enjoyable (could have fit on FLYING HIGH).

I *still* revere those initial Beat albums and have vivid memories of a
two-show double bill of The Beat and 20/20 in a small club where they
alternated as headliners and tried to out-powerpop each other. You can't go
backwards, but this album reaffirms that Collins is still a force in the
genre.
