I commented on this to people at the time (without having heard the original) that Whitney climaxes right out of the gate -- first chorus, in fact -- which leaves her writhing around on the bed and the listener remains unsatisfied and leaves the room because the woman continues to wallow long after the song should have ended.

I blame the production of that song for the diva dross that has pervaded pop culture since. The Mariahs, The Beyonces, that piece of crap 'show topper' song from "Dream Girls", the American Idol wannabes. No one knows how to deliver a soulful, climactic R & B song. Listen to "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" by Roberta Flack. THAT is the template by which all divas should aspire. Not an exploding head/vocal chord in the entire song.
