Still on a high after catching Rachael Yamagata perform her rocker "Faster" last night on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno". Whoa! A knock out performance. Can't get enough of her new double album "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" on Warner Brothers that was released this week.
The Major Labels have been discussed on this list but another cool side project for Mike Viola that hasn't been mentioned (and the man has many - currently co-writing with Mandy Moore for her upcoming album) is Kelly Jones latest album "SheBANG!". Mike co-wrote half of the songs on the album along with producing and arranging the album. Kelly also co-wrote a song with Adam Schlesinger from Fountains Of Wayne. Ducky Carlisle, Brian Wolfe and Steve Elliot are the other musicians on her third album.
The album clocks in at just under 28 minutes and all ten songs are fantastic. We've been spinning her album on the air for the last week and a half and the songs sound incredible. So catchy and melodic as if early Marshall Crenshaw and the Bangles decided to work together. Candy Butchers and Mike Viola fans will definately dig this album. This is definately one of my favorite releases this year joining Rachael Yamagata, Randy Newman, Rick Springfield and She & Him to round out the top five with three months left for the year. I didn't get a chance yet to pick up The Pretenders album that came out this week but I've been digging every song so far that I've heard. Ken Sharp's "Sonic Crayons" still dominates most of my car listening and if you haven't picked up a copy after a year has passed - you really should add it to your listening experience.
Kelly Jones will be our radio guest from 3:30 PM to 5PM this Saturday afternoon in Hawaii. I'm sure that we are going to play as much music as we can from the release if you'd like to check out what the album sounds like. Who am I kidding? It's less than thirty minutes so of course we'll be playing all the songs. :=)
