snip..The one negative, and it wasn't terrible, but noticeable, was
Chris
Difford's almost total lack of eye contact with Tilbrook, although Glenn
tried all concert long to engage him in the fun. Difford showed no
signs of
fun or joy and rarely even smiled. Don't know if they fought
beforehand or
if they're just doing the tour for money and never reconciled their
differences (Tilbrook did introduce him as "my arch-enemy and my best
mate),
but it seemed pretty clear that Difford wasn't happy to be there.
Does anyone know what the beef was about between them? Different
personalities, egos, tensions?
When I saw Tilbrook solo a few years ago he went on for about a minute
making light of what a weird, jackass Difford is (I don't recall the
specifics but that's a pretty fair paraphrase). I think he was
intending it to be in part funny but it felt a bit uncompfortable. Then
he ended with an "oh, we get along pretty well now".
One of the times I saw Squeeze warming up for Elvis Costello was at
Northrup in Mpls many years ago. Some guy in the crowd was heckling
them per he came to see Costello. Tilbrook rightly flipped the guy "the
bird" with as much conviction as I've ever witnessed. A memorable
moment followed by Glenn bunny hopping across the width of the long
stage with guitar in hand. Great fun.
