Folks,
On my radio show this week I'm doing a 30th anniversary tribute to New
York City's WPIX-FM from the late `70s. The station had an "Elvis to
Elvis" new-wave format. If you weren't around to hear PIX, perhaps you
know it from the line "P-I-X and rock `n' roll" in Squeeze's "I Think
I'm Go Go." What distinguished PIX from other new-music stations was
its willingness to play '50 and `60s rock `n' roll alongside the new
stuff, thus giving listeners a chance to connect the present to the
past. It remains the best commercial station I've ever heard. A live
event is being planned in New York to further celebrate the station's
legacy (inquire if interested).

You can hear my "PIX Penthouse Party" over freeform station The Detour
on Sunday, Sept. 14 from 8-11 p.m. EST and Thursday, Sept. 18 from 9
a.m.-12 noon.

My regular "Family Entertainment" show is otherwise heard during those
hours. Not a power-pop show, per se, but definitely power-pop friendly
with generous helpings of blues, honky tonk, soul, garage bands,
rockabilly, singer-songwriters, etc. – both vintage and new sounds
with an indie slant. I will do a power-pop special in October.

You can find The Detour on the Internet, at iTunes, and at 105.3 FM in
Johnson City, Tennessee. No registration needed to listen. Just go to
www.thedetour.us, click on Detour Music, and then select your
preferred listening player.

We are a work-in-progress, and our programming is likely to change as
time goes on. SUGGESTIONS AND IDEAS ARE NOT ONLY WELCOME BUT NEEDED.
Most people on this list probably have a great radio show in them.

For more info on "Family Entertainment" (including news of upcoming
specials and recent playlists), look here:

End of shameless self-promotion. We now return to your regularly
scheduled program.
