wow, that's an interesting take. I saw their second ever gig at a record store about 1.5-2 years ago and was blown away! It was a feeling I hadn't had in a long time and I have been watching their rise with great interest. The bass player even worked at my company for a few months there.
Most of the excitement they generated here in Los Angeles was based on their dynamic live show, which included lots of instrument switching and even the use of an old sports car trunk hood as a percussion instrument.
What was unappealing about their set to you? I wonder if they are tired from touring, or if they have just scaled back things since it's an opening slot?
