I learned this many years ago as well. The bio we would send out for our acts became 'press releases' in that it encompassed EVERYTHING we wanted the world to perceive about the act. True or not. If we wanted the band to start traveling the road with other famed rock acts we'd include THEIR names in the bio as an influence. Before you knew it, the reviews started name checking these acts as 'sounding like' in the album reviews. Many times the acts themselves had never even listened to the records of these acts.
Conversely, I recall one time when our band Soap Opera was playing on the East Coast of Canada and were opening for some celtic-styled acts (a mismatch of styles as the band was actually more like the Buffalo Tom meets The Foo Fighters but necessary to get a leg-up in that territory's bar scene), but when the bio for the tour mentioned this, suddenly reviewers were saying the band's new album was inspired by THE POGUES!!
So...be very careful about what you write in your bio. It may come back to bite you in ways you could never imagine.
