Why is it sad or unfortunate? He's running his own business, making a
record he wanted to make w/o A&R overlords (presumably), and is lucky
to have enough name recognition to land a major as distributor.
As for this business - it is what you make of it. The majors are
just like movie studios now and are hooked on mega hits to cover
their bottom line, and again like the studios everything but the
blockbusters (& lots of those too) are just distribution deals.
EMI = Coldplay.
And hey - he's Rick Springfield - he could hit all the remaining
daytime talkshows and get a spread in Soap Digest at every checkout
stand. What would you give for that?
