I first came into contact with Gary in the mid-90s when I subscribed to
a brand new power pop magazine called Audities. I submitted a year end
best-of list, which was published in the mag. I contacted Gary to ask
if they needed any regular contributors. In response, he called me at
home. We chatted for about 45 minutes, about the power pop scene, which
at that time was undergoing a magnificent renaissance.
I guess I passed the "interview," because Gary began to assign me
interviews and the occasional feature. Eventually, I pitched to him a
concept for a column called "Guilty Pleasures," about music you don't
necessarily want others to know you like. The column ran until
Audities' sudden demise.
I greatly enjoyed working with Gary (and Anthony); I suppose that's why
I was so hurt when Audities suddenly ceased to exist, with virtually no
explanation to its staff or readers. It wasn't until years later that I
came to learn about Gary's health situation. That's the kind of person
he was (to me, anyway)--he kept his private affairs private.
I eventually migrated to another brand new music magazine called
Amplifier. I took my column with me, renaming it "Pop Secret!" I will
forever be in gratitude to Gary for giving me my first break as a music
scribe.
Rest in peace, friend. There's no wrong notes in heaven.

P.S. My first thought upon hearing the sad news was identical to Scott
Homewood's: let's retain the Audities name as a tribute to Gary. It's
always held a special place in my heart anyway.
