I think it was me who first brought in the stoning metaphor, so perhaps I
should be the first with my back against the wall.
As I get older, I'm finding I'm more and more fascinated by the mechanics of
what makes a good song. This is equally true of everything from Michael
Carpenter to a Kylie Minogue single.
Frankly, I'd give my eye teeth to write a chorus as catchy as the ones in
"Stacy's Mom," or "Viva La Vida." I'm just consistenly amazed the people
find new ways to string notes and chord progressions along in a way that
cause people to jump up and down in their seats or to have something
approximating a transcdental experience at their concerts.
True, the stuff being produced by American Idols may be soulless. But if you
actually *listen* to the way Max Martin put "Since U Been Gone" together,
it's damned near genius. And, as I recall, it was "ok" to like that song
because it was "power-poppy," or as long as it was done with the
appropriate amount of irony.
I'll be 40 in 2 years. If I spent all my time worrying about what I was
supposed to like, I'd never leave the damn house.
