Definitely my favorite album so far this year is Bon Iver's 'For Emma, Forever Ago.' In fact, it was among my favorite records last year, but now it's gotten an official "big indie" release, so 2008 it is. A gorgeous, spacious, melancholy record that becomes surprisingly loud and raucous when played live (a great show at the small Lakeshore Theatre in Chicago this past spring). Not sure how this is going to translate at Pitchfork on a hot, sunny afternoon, but still well worth the check-in.

Not far behind...
Alla - Es Tiempo -- a lot of comparisons to Os Mutantes...a breezy, all-emcompassing mix of poppy, psychedelic, electronic, and experimental sounds with lovely female vocals, all in Spanish. And from right here in Chicago!

Also well worth your while...
Cut Copy - In Ghost Colors (the pop songs more than the dance numbers)
Los Campesinos - Hold On Now Youngsters
Raveonettes - Lust Lust Lust
Silver Jews - Lookout Mountain, Lookout Sea
She and Him - Volume One
M83 - Saturdays = Youth (I haven't always been a fan of these guys, but I can listen to "Graveyard Girl" over and over)

Funny about the My Morning Jacket comment. I haven't really listened to the record yet, but almost every review I've seen of it has been overwhelmingly positive!

And the most fun I've had in awhile was seeing the Liz Phair Exile in Guyville 15 year anniversary show here in Chicago last week. Maybe it was more about 22 year old me than anything else, but it was great to hear all those songs here at home. I'd forgotten how often I listened to that record, and how it important it was to me at the time, and it was a blast to hear it live (without having to sit through the modern day Liz dreck -- other than one absolutely terrible new song in the encore).
