Music retail anecdote #458:
I was thumbing through the racks at Amoeba Records on Sunset the other day
when I heard something on the in-store playback system that really caught my
ear.*
I went over to the info desk to learn more, and there were two people ahead
of me making the same inquiry about the CD. Good micro-marketing on the part
of the store, right? Reminds of you of John Cusack's "I'm gonna sell three
copies of this Beta Band record today" moment in HIGH FIDELITY, right?
Well, no. They didn't have the CD in stock. D'oh!
As it happened, one of the other customers placed an order for the CD and
the other (a visiting out-of-towner) left disappointed. (Me? I waited until
the demo finished playing, went back to the desk and coaxed them into
selling me the used disc.) Now, this is unusual for Amoeba, a store that
usually does things right. But one would think it's a no-brainer to actually
stock a title you're promoting!

*The CD in question was THE BEAUTY ROOM, which I just now posted about.
